Made in New Zealand, Guthrie & Steele’s unique jewellery range offers a selection of stunning sterling silver pendants, including the option to be hung from a handcrafted, chunky chain.

The bold pieces, predominantly featuring variations of crosses and hearts, are fast becoming the must-have fashion piece for discerning women. The intricate yet bold designs make Guthrie & Steele’s jewellery stand out from the crowd, and they are certainly pieces that are turning heads and creating conversation.

Founded by mother and daughter team Sue and Kate Guthrie, Guthrie & Steele started out as a hobby, which proved so popular with family and friends that the pair decided to go into business.

Sue, who has always had a creative flair, was looking for a new challenge in life, and enrolled in a silversmith course. She decided to turn a set of sterling silver teaspoons, which her grandfather had brought back from the First World War, into rings for her daughters. She had so much interest in the rings she continued to make more. She then started turning the spoon heads into pendants and hand making chains.

Kate, who has worked previously in interior design, was inspired by her mother’s newfound passion, and decided she would like to have a go too. She loved doing it and now spends her days creating jewellery and working on new concepts and designs.

With retailers now selling their jewellery throughout New Zealand, Guthrie & Steele is looking to grow the business overseas, and also expand the ranges to include more rings and bracelets, and eventually a line for men. They have also just launched a range for girls.

As with the adults ranges the pieces in the 'For Girls" collection are designed to be timeless. “I have been buying special gifts from overseas from the like of Tiffany’s, and knew there was a gap in that market in New Zealand. I think children today are surrounded with so many disposable things that it is important that they have special things to look after and cherish,” explains Kate. "We wanted to create jewellery so you can own a Guthrie & Steele necklace at five and still be wearing it in your teenage years and beyond". And as a mother of four girls (ranging from ages six to fourteen years) Kate has the ideal environment in which to perfect her designs.

As a result, the girls’ range of necklaces, featuring a wide range of pendants including hearts and crosses (just like Mum), and puppies, angels, and more, are already proving popular as christening and birthday gifts.

In a world where mass-production is so often at the forefront of fashion, Kate and Sue are proud to be handcrafting jewellery in New Zealand. “I would love to see our pieces in London, Paris and New York,” says Sue. And given the interest they have already received this looks likely to happen sooner rather than later.
